The recent headline is something related to “Roger Federer’s noticeable low performance at Wimbledon Quarter Final”. He has various experiences of physical setbacks and recoveries. So, writing him off would not be so wise.

Roger spent his early days in Switzerland village near the French border and this is the reason for his fluency in Swiss German, Standard German, English and French. Among these, Swiss German is his native language and he can speak Italian and Swedish.

Childhood love for Sports

In 1985, when Roger Federer was 4 years old, his childhood icon Boris Boker won the first Wimbledon title and after that, he used to watch Tennis matches for hours on the television and joined sports class for 3 days per week in school. Afterward, he continued to play Tennis with his school friend Macro Chiudinelli.

In 1991, at the age of 10, he joined a personal coaching class with his junior coach Adolf Kacovsky. During the coaching, his coach noticed that Roger was born with a racquet in his hand. He was a quick learner and used to learn a new trick in just 3-4 tries while other club members took weeks to learn the same thing.

Rising of Junior Tennis Star

He also worked as a ball boy(who retrieves and supplies balls for the players) in his hometown tournaments in Basel.

In his teenage years, he was used to playing other games rather than Tennis like Soccer, Basketball, Badminton,  but after 12, he focused only on Tennis. He used to say that he wanted to become the world champion and people including his coach laughed at him saying that you can become one of the best in Switzerland but not in the world. Soon, at 14 he became the best in Switzerland group and sent for training at the National Training Center of Swiss.

As per the Swiss rule, all the capable men adults have to serve in military service The Swiss Armed Force. Following the rule, Federer had also joined the military to serve. But, it couldn’t last for long as he was suffering from severe back pain and it caused discharge from the military service.

Instead, he was drafted into the Civil Protection Force and had to pay 3% of his taxable income.

Roger met Miroslava(Mirka) in the Sydney Summer Olympics, 2000 where they both were representing their country Switzerland and on the last day of Sydney, they both shared the kiss for the first time. Mirka was one of the top 100 Tennis players(for both men and women). In 2002, because of an interminable foot injury, she retired from Tennis.

The couple was married in April of 2009 in Reihen(A place near Basel, Switzerland). They were blessed with identical twin girls Myra and Charlene in 2009 itself. Again in 2014, Mirka gave birth to identical twins but this time they were boys – Leo and Lenny.

After early retirement, Mirka had started to work with Roger as his Public Relationship Manager and travel with her husband on all his trips, sometimes bringing their children with her to enjoy the company and the match of their champion father.

In an Interview, Roger Federer has accepted that he would have taken early retirement from Tennis if his wife had asked him. He also added that if Mirka hadn’t supported him to manage his family and career, they might have ended with the divorce.

There are already numerous books available on the Tennis career of Roger Federer along this 20+ years long career and here also it can take several pages! Rather, I would like to highlight some of the turning points of his career.

The first was his 1st international breakthrough. It was the Wimbledon Championship 2001, Federer beat the No. 1 Pete Sampras and reached the quarter-final and reached at No. 6.

He won his 1st Grand Slam Tournament title in 2003 and after that, it has continued to the date, and won 20 Grand Slam Tournament.

2007 was the year of Federer Roger. He defeated Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon and became the second man who won 5 continuous Wimbledon titles.

After that, he suffered from major injuries in 2008,2013, 2016, and 2020. Every time he returned like never before and proved himself against all the odds.

But, in his latest comeback, in 2021, at the age of 39, when his goal was just back at Wimbledon, he reached the Quarter Final and lost against Hubert Hurkacz.

At the time, he revealed that he is not sure about his comeback. Though Tennis is his life, he is aiming to play again. We can just pray for his better recovery.
