iOS 15 – What’s new in MDM?

If a company employs Apple devices, then it probably also uses its mobile device management (MDM) protocols to keep track of the fleet. iOS 15 and the iOS MDM upgrades are recommended for all users as it improves the stability, performance, and compatibility of their devices. An MDM solution can help device administrators manage software updates with ease.

New features in iOS MDM

New features like Managed Pasteboard which is an improved form of User Enrollment experience, a new declarative management capability and several other device management improvements have been made. It includes:

Device Management

  • A new Controlled Pasteboard limitation guarantees that information is pasted according to the Managed Open In rules that have been set up.
  • In the Files app, user enrollment grants access to iCloud Drive for both personal and Managed Apple ID accounts.
  • Users can enroil using their designated Managed Apple ID from their device using a new account-based enrollment pathway found in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
  • Preferred KDCs can now be specified in the Extensible Single Sign-On payload.
  • The new key in the TV Remote payload introduced in tvOS 15 can be used to eliminate Apple TV device names from the Apple TV remote widget.
  • On monitored devices, iCloud Private Relay can be disabled, and also lets you find out how to get your network ready for iCloud Private Relay.

Other enhancements and bug fixes

  • For recipients discovered in an Exchange Global Address List, the “DisplayName” will now be displayed when writing a mail message. When a per-account VPN connection is not formed for all accounts and services with Exchange accounts, the issue gets fixed.
  • If there is a software update, the message is not disabled, even if the Messenger and FaceTime screen have a configuration of skipping during the enrolment.
  • If a software update is pushed by MDM for a password protected device when it is in a locked state, the Lock Screen will not show an error.
  • The Setup Assistant will now appropriately quit on devices prepared using cfgutil, a command-line tool.
  • Fixed a problem where Mail alerts aren’t showing up on the Lock Screen.
  • Contacts will now be correctly sorted when choosing recipients in Mail when devices are configured for the Japanese language and Open In Management constraints are enabled.
  • In DHCPv4, iOS MDM supports the IPv6-Only-Preferred option. This option allows IPv6 enabled devices to skip the IPv4 address assignment.
  • Face ID and Touch ID can now be used for authentication in the Single Sign-On extension.
  • When using the SafariViewController API to authenticate, Kerberos SSO credentials are correctly transmitted to ADFS servers.
  • The function, known as Universal Control, allows users to move their mouse pointer across iPad and Mac screens.
